Body Positivity
If you have the slightest interest in health and fitness you do not need to spend much time online before images and quotes depicting #fitspo or #fitspiration seep onto your screen. At first glance these images may appear inspiring, however the core message is deceptively harmful. The movement portrays exercise as a punishment, reducing someone’s self-worth to their physical appearance (i.e. “sweat is fat crying” or “would you rather be covered in sweat at the gym or covered in clothes at the beach?”). Exercise is so much more than a way to burn calories. Your workout is your sacred time to reconnect with yourself. It is where you enjoy all the wonderful ways your body can move, relieve stress, and prove to yourself how strong you are when things get tough. I am grateful to be a part of a community at the The Dailey Method Vancouver where people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels are celebrated. When I teach a class, my mission is to create a space for people to feel empowered in their own bodies. To me, body positivity is not only about loving your body, but about seeing yourself as MORE than a body.
